This empty appearance is dreamlike in that it is spontaneous, immediate, and insubstantial—but it is not a dream. A dream implies there is a dreamer and that there is something real the dreamer can awaken to. There is waking from a nighttime dream into this so-called real world, and the suggestion that this world is itself a dream that can be awakened from. Yet no such awakening occurs, because there is no one to awaken. What appears does not lead anywhere else. It does not resolve into something real. There is simply this empty appearance.
