It seems natural to assume that what appears must be of something, as though every appearance has an origin or essence behind it. This creates the sense that what is seen represents something real and fundamental. Yet no such underlying reality is ever found. What appears does not come from anything, nor does it point back to anything else. It is not a surface hiding depth, but simply an appearance as something. There is nothing beneath it and nothing beyond it. What appears is not of anything—it is only this, appearing as something and everything.
